Effective Methods to Maximize Diecutting Productivity

Sunday, August 27, 2023

9:00am – 5:00pm

*Requires additional registration and fee outside of full conference

This comprehensive one-day workshop will enable students to better comprehend why equipment differences, general maintenance needs, and subtle structural design differences influence  quality and profitability for corrugated converters.  Attendees will gain a much better understanding of machine limitations on all sorts of flatbed and rotary diecutters. They will have a deeper awareness of how establishing a tool readiness program increases uptime and reduces waste.

Workshop Schedule

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this workshop, participants and their companies will benefit from these key takeaways:

  1. Distinguish differences in various flatbed diecutters
  2. Create accurate specifications for Rotary Diecutters and FFG
  3. Recognize pitfalls in structural designs that limit diecutting efficiency
  4. Indicate how key maintenance practices on the diecutters increase uptime and reduce waste
  5. Identify influential factors of dimensional variation in rotary diecutting.
  6. Implementing a tool readiness program drastically reduces idle time in your converting processes

Rick Putch has 45 years of experience in diemaking and in the packaging industry, Rick’s expertise spans all aspects of paper conversion: diemaking, diecutting, packaging design, and materials testing.Rick has worked as a pressman, business owner, and in executive management, and has taught classes for TAPPI, AICC, ACCCSA, and IADD. Additionally, he has written technical papers for an assortment of trade publications.Rick has conducted best practices training on corrugated finishing and efficient package design for corporations in 35 countries and 10 different language translations. He is regarded as a world-class expert on evaluating manufacturing processes for new product concepts and for resolving production issues on a wide variety of manufactured products produced with steel rule cutting dies.He previously served on the Board of Directors of IADD and is one of only 14 IADD Tech Team members based all over the world. He has received several prestigious industry awards, most notably IADD’s inaugural PEAK Award presented in Interlaken, Switzerland and the Division Technical Award from TAPPI.

“Rick is the first person I think of as a resource for anything to do with rotary diecutting. When I was in Mexico City and had a problem with anvil oscillation, he had all the answers and supporting slides. He even told me from the photos that the cylinder was rotating too quickly! This will be covered in the workshop. He communicates and presents well and has a great manner about him that operators find helpful.”  – Les P.

“I have engaged with Rick over the past 20 years to help solve and improve some of the most difficult diecutting issues. He has been instrumental in training our internal die making and diecutting teams and his enthusiasm and excitement is contagious, as is his passion for what he does.”  – Brett K.

What Previous Clients Say about Rick Putch

“I know of no one who has a better grasp of what it takes to produce a scrap-free load at high speed than Rick Putch.”  – Ron S.

“Rick’s training is great and immensely beneficial. AG, and me, fully endorse his training and insights in “Effective Methods to Maximize Diecutting Productivity.”  – Joe W.

“The work you’ve done for Orora has helped us enormously. Especially the designers’ understanding of how to design for the machines they’re running which has helped thruput and reduced waste. Working with supervisors and operators on how to better troubleshoot has helped them become more efficient and better at finding the root of the problem instead of addressing all the symptoms.”  – David R.
